What is acne? Acne is a common skin condition, which can develop in puberty or adulthood. It will affect 80% of the human population to some degree. Many assume acne is solely due to an over-production of oil and thus attaches oily/acne products to the issue. The reality is that acne is caused when a hair follicle becomes “congested” with sebum (oil) and skin cells; we call them blackheads or whiteheads. The inflammatory progression of this state is where the bacteria enter the equation and papules and pustules are formed (Acne Vulgaris)… thick oil + skin cells + bacteria = ZITS!
It is thought that the best way to treat acne is to strip the oil from the skin as a remedy to fight troublesome break outs. but are you doing more harm than good?
The first line of defence against any inflammatory condition is the skin barrier function. This fortified by the acid mantle. If the acid mantle is compromised, the luscious epidermal layers that hold hydration and ceramides (fatty acids, lipids) are as well, leaving the skin dry and vulnerable. If the skin is dry, its immune function could be compromised, and could have a hard time fighting infection created by acne. This leads to trauma pigment and potential dermal scarring. Not fun!
The key to managing, reducing, and hopefully preventing acne formation lies in the following formula:
The perfect amount of exfoliation (please don’t use apricot scrubs or anything too aggressive to exfoliate) + proper skin hydration/moisture balance + protecting antioxidants and anti-inflammatories = bright and clear skin (easy peasy, right?)
